Dr. David Layne comes to Taft College from Colorado where he worked for nearly 18 years as a corporate controller in a highway paving firm. He was also a partner in a public accounting firm for 12 years. He enjoyed being an adjunct instructor for AIMS Community College for eight years. After doing a mid-career change, Dr. Layne began his full-time teaching career by taking a position in secondary education at the local high school where he taught “at risk” students in a K-12 program for seven years in a small community north of Denver.
An opportunity to work as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Dolores Huerta High School, an alternative education school, prompted a move to Pueblo, Colorado. A year later, Colorado Technical University lured him away to teach full-time in the business department and to act as the local campus dean. Two years later, the call from Taft College provided an irresistible offer to make the move to California and to become part of the learning community. Dr. Layne raised a family of five and currently enjoys his seven grandchildren. His interests include mentoring, reading, writing, community service, and making trips to the coast whenever possible.
